Eocheongdo, the westernmost island of Korea, is about 300 km away from Shantung province of China. Meaning "Evergreen Island", Eocheongdo Island (於靑島) has a "C" shape bay and when the weather gets bad, the bay is used as a natural shelter for ships. The lighthouse, a representative place of Eocheongdo Island, was built during the Japanese Colonial Era in 1912 to safely guide ships to China. The lighthouse on the coastal cliffs is 61m above sea level, and thus the light can be seen as far as 37 km away from the lighthouse.
The Eocheongdo Island lighthouse, harmonized with the surrounding sea, has been well maintained, hosting the modern light ignition system , and thus it is a very valuable instrument for collecting data for maritime research. The circular concrete lighthouse has been preserved in its original condition; the bargeboard on the top of the gate, the traditional-rafter-like observatory and the red hanging lanterns are some of its unique features. The lighthouse itself is beautiful, but the pine forest and the blue sea make the scenery even more magical like a beautiful painting. In 2004, it became the fourth lighthouse designated as Registered Cultural Property in South Korea.
