Eocheongdo Island was an important strategic point in the Yellow Sea and hosts the beacon fire station, which was established at the top of Seobangsan Mountain during the Joseon Dynasty to monitor foreign intrusion. Most beacon fire stations around the coasts at that time were used to respond against Japanese intrusion from the south, but the beacon fire station on Eocheongdo Island was built to monitor foreign intrusion from China.
Though it was decommissioned along with other beacon fire stations on Oeyeondo Island and Nokdo Island in 1677 due to management and maintenance issues, traces of the beacon fire stations still remain. According to the record, the beacon fire station of Eocheongdo Island was a circular stone structure at approximately 2m; there is also a square-shaped house site for temporary residence of soldiers guarding the beacon fire station located nearby.
