On the Great Map of the East land and also on “Sinjeungdonggukyeojiseungnam” in the 16th century, the original title is “Mije Reservoir.” The word Mije (米堤) originates from “land of rice.” The current title of Mije-ri in front of Gunsan University is also from here. It is presumed that it was built during the end of the Goryeo Era, but there is no accurate record.
Through the record of circumference of “10,910 cheok at 4km away from the north of Okgu-hyeon” published in the 15th century via Sinjeungdonggukyeojiseungnam, the size of Mije Reservoir may be estimated. The unit of 10,910 cheok can be converted to be about 6.9km.
Having been called Mije Reservoir for a few hundred years, this region has been called Eunpa since 1975. An entrepreneur, Mr. Ryu, who thought of the recreation business from Mije Reservoir, submitted a petition for a business license with the business title “Eunpa,” meaning silver wave, from his father’s title; he received the business license in 1975, and it has been called Eunpa Lake ever since.
Currently, one of the essential attractions not only for Gunsan citizens but also travelers to Gunsan—Eunpa Lake Park—has a trail, in-line skate stadium, water stage, lotus garden, and other park attractions. This place was selected as one of the 100 national attractions.
