Located at the center of Gunsan City, Wolmyeong Park is a resting place and attraction for citizens. Beautiful cherry blossoms and camellia in spring and amazing leaves in autumn attract people, and at the top of the intersection, you can see Geumgang River and the Yellow Sea at a glance. This is also one site of the sad modern history of the Korean Empire.
In 1906, the Korean Empire named a wide land near Haemangjeong Pavilion, one of many famous Korean scenic points, “Gakguk Park” and opened it for local citizens. After the Japanese annexation of Korea, as Joseon became a colony of Japan, it was called Gunsan Park.
Called “Gunsan Park” during the Japanese Colonial Era, Wolmyeong Park was expanded as Gunsan City purchased the land of Haemang-dong, where Susitap Tower is now located, in 1933; the city was prosperous from trade with Japan. After independence and the Korean War, as a number of trees had been significantly reduced due to ignorant cutting down of trees, in 1972, the wide region from Haemang-dong Susitap Tower to the back of the mountain at Gunsan University in Miryong-dong was set as the limited development district (LDD). The name Gunsan Park by Japan was also changed to “Wolmyeong Park.”
Due to the hills on the trails, it is loved by citizens as a space for exercise; there is an observatory to see Gunsan Town and Gunsan Harbor.
