At Balsan Elementary School, Gaejeong-myeon, Gunsan, the striking 3-story building was once used as a safe by Simatani, a Japanese farm owner during the Japanese colonial era. The 3-story building, composed of one semi-basement and two stories above ground, has iron bars in every exterior window while the outside is enclosed with an iron gate for double anti-intruder protection. A thick safe gate was placed at the entrance to hinder outsiders. Clothes and food were usually stored on the first floor, or the semi-basement, while on the second floor, important documents and cash were stored. On the third floor were stored antique Korean art work that was illegally gained. To be doubly sure, Simatani used ferroconcrete to make a stronger building to prevent theft.
