It is the world's longest seawall at 33.9 km which connect Gunsan, Gogunsan archipelago and Buan-gun County. The average bottom width of the Saemangeum seawall is 290 m, and the average height is 36 m. Due to construction of the seawall, the wide land which was under water was revealed and could be reclaimed . The size of the reclaimed land is 2/3 of Seoul City and 140 times of Yeoeuido. Among the reclaimed land, 71% of the total area belongs to Gunsan. As the Saemangeum seawall was completed, the land area of South Korea was increased by 0.4%; which in relative terms is a significant increase.
The seawall construction for the Saemangeum reclamation began in 1991, and it was completed 9 years later in April, 2010. During the construction, it received national attention because the depth of water was 34m and the maximum water speed was 7m per second; this made it extremely difficult to build the seawall. In spite of many difficulties, the construction was solely built using domestic technology. The seawall was designed to be safe against the frequent and intense waves. For this construction, 100.2 million m2 of soil, which could cover the 418 km of Gyeongbu Expressway piled 13 m high, was used. 2.37 million workers , dredges, dump trucks, and 910,000 devices were put to use. Through the Saemangeum Reclamation Project , this region is expected to become the economic center of Northeast Asia.
