Spreading out over about 50 km across the seas from the southwest of Gunsan, Gogunsan Archipelago is composed of a total of 63 islands. Among them, only 16 islands such as Seonyudo Island, Jangjado Island, Eocheongdo Island, Munyeodo Island, and Sinsido Island are inhabited, the other islands being uninhabited.
The strategic point in the Yellow Sea, the naval force camp called Gunsanjin (群山鎭), was installed on Seonyudo Island beginning in the Goryeo Dynasty, and from the early Joseon Dynasty, a naval force camp was set up to withstand foreign intrusion. However, as Japanese trawled the coast during the reign of Joseon king Sejong to conduct frequent inland raids, the naval force camp was transferred to Jinpo (鎭浦), Okgu-hyeon, and took this name as well. The letter "Go (古) (Old)" was added to the old name of Seonyudo Island, called Gunsando, to become Gogunsan.
As the Saemangeum embankment works have continued, currently a bridge connecting Sinsido Island the mainland has been constructed.
