Among the 63 small and big islands of the Gogunsan Archipelago, Seonyudo Island is famous for having the best scenery. The name Seonyudo means "the island where hermits used to stay for its beautiful scene." With a towering gray stone peak to boost its dignity, Seonyudo Island is surrounded by a ring of islands, and thus is called "the island within islands." As other islands block strong wave actions, the waves are soft, and at dawn with a thick fog, you may feel like you are on an island within a lake surrounded by mountain peaks. This island is home to the outstanding sceneries known as the "Seonyu 8 Sceneries" such as glow of the sunset and picturesque beaches.
From times long past, Seonyudo Island was a very militarily significant maritime strategic point. General Yi, Sun-shin also strategically used the location of Seonyudo’s geopolitical factors during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 and the Jeongyujaeran War. Winning the Battle of Myeongnyang, Chungmugong Yi, Sun-shin did not delay his strategy against a second attack by the Japanese and headed to Gogunsan Archipelago, with its many islands. He arrived at Seonyudo in six days by passing Wido Island after the Battle of Myeongnyang just as an autumn typhoon was blowing in. The naval forces of Joseon stopped here to repair their vessels and rest. According to "A War Diary", Chungmugong Yi, Sun-shin caught a cold after arriving at Seonyudo Island, and after a rest of twelve days, he again headed south.
