Only 300 km away from the Shantung Peninsula of China, Eocheongdo Island is due west of Jeollabuk-do Province, and the fishery industry prospered hugely here.
Japanese ships with new fishing gear appeared in the late 19th century to catch sea bream and stingray, and at that time, Japanese called Eocheongdo Island "Gonppiraseom Islet", meaning ‘the sea god dragon lives here’. To allow ships to approach more easily, they made an embankment to the Bay of Eocheongso.
Eocheongdo Island was also famous for its whaling industry. When the whales drew near Eocheongdo to give birth, whaling ships from Jangsaengpo Ferry in the East Sea followed. Until the 1970s, many whaling ships anchored at Eocheongdo Island to dissect whales.
