It is a 131m-long and 4.5m-high semicircular tunnel passing through Haemangryeong Peak at the north of Wolmyeongsan Mountain; it was constructed in October 1926.
Haemanggul Cave was opened to directly connect the road of the old City Hall, which was the center of downtown at that time, with the inner harbor of Gunsan. As the wide tunnel for vehicles to pass through was opened, the time and effort to send grains from the Honam Plains were significantly reduced. Haemanggul Cave is the historical scene of Japanese effort to export rice from the Honam Plains during the Japanese Colonial Era.
Furthermore, the North Korean Control Center during the Korean War in 1950 at Gunsan was within Haemanggul Cave, thus it was bombed by the Allied Forces.
