This is the movie studio of the famous and sensational movie “Christmas in August” by Han, Seok-gyu and Shim, Eun-ha, released in January 1998. Having looked at filming site of studios throughout the country, the movie staff could not find a proper place even in Gunsan and went into a café for a rest; there, they found a garage with the shadow of a tree on a summer day through a window—the garage of which they changed into a photo studio set after permission from the owner.
The name “Chowon Photo Studio” was made by the main actor Han, Seok-gyu; he named it after the studio in his hometown when he was young. Most movie scenes were taken within and around the studio . After shooting the film, it was closed; but as travelers visited for their memories of the movie, Gunsan City restored it to its original features.
For the movie shooting, the staff built a studio similar to the original one, and local citizens misunderstood and visited it to take a photo. Within a movie, some people taking a family photo were not extras but actual visitors. Furthermore, a lot of snow was required for winter scenes within the movie, but as the shooting season was the end of November, there was not much snow. Therefore, the staff had to put cotton around the studio and then poured salt to make the background look like it was snowing. After shooting, local citizens agreed to take salt to make Kimchi, and thus the staff could reduce their effort to clean up the area.
